Sheepskin bedding
Introduction
Sheepskin and wool bedding products offer benefits that are far superior to any man-made synthetic materials. Only genuine sheepskins that have undergone specialist tanning provide the comfort and relief offered by sheepskin underlays and medical rugs.
Sheepskin underlay
The sheepskin underlay is similar to having a medical rug for the whole bed. Each sheepskin mattress pad or underlay is pieced together in a similar way to a multi-pelt floor rug. Each underlay is made up of numerous pieces of medical sheepskins that have been sewn together.
The overall shape of this large mattress pad is trimmed to fit the mattress top and a soft wool backing is added for further comfort. The edges are protected with a neat binding and elastic straps hold the underlay firmly in place on the mattress.
The underlay or bed pad is a premium product. When comparing prices, remember this is made from actual sheepskin pelts, it is not a woven wool or synthetics product.
Benefits of sheepskin bedding
Produced solely as a bi-product of the food and fiber industry, Australian sheepskins are made into a therapeutic item of bedding.
Genuine natural sheepskin has a fiber density far in excess of artificially manufactured alternatives, cushioning the body's weight, distributing it evenly, and avoiding pressure areas that can cause discomfort.
Warm and cosy in cold weather, wool also insulates in hot weather by absorbing body moisture (nature's cooling system) and releasing it into the air.
Natural sheepskin fleece is held firmly into the leather by a special medical sheepskin tanning process. This enables it to withstand repeated laundering, offering comfort and support for longer than woven alternatives.
Genuine leather and wool are naturally fire resistant, being difficult to ignite and slow to burn.
Medical Rugs
Sourced from Australia, tanned in New Zealand, the skin used for GL Bowron's FleeceEase is of the highest quality. It meets the stringent criteria set by the Woolmark standards.
The FleeceEase medical sheepskin rug is a large single pelt having a minimum length 110cm (44"). It has been shorn to a wool length of approximately 30mm (1.2"). The skin has been selected for its densely packed wool pile that is capable of supporting the body and absorbing moisture so you feel fresher and more comfortable.
We are sometimes asked the difference between the FleeceEase medical rug and Baby Care shorn baby comforter. The BabyCare shorn is made from a New Zealand lambskin that is softer. The weight of the baby is much less so a different density of fibers is desired.
Both types of care rug undergo a strict, comprehensive tanning process.
Medical sheepskin rug uses
